Today, the Supreme Court has shown it could be a reputable institution able to protect the rights of the queer community by refusing to hear Kim Davis’ case and consider overturning gay marriage.

I want to take the win, but it is not enough. On Thursday, the Supreme Court gave into the tactics of this administration and spread misinformation about the transgender community. People wanting to change their gender marker on federal documents can no longer do so. The court also upheld the administration’s policy to ban “X” gender markers.

The LGBTQ+ community has to remain unified and, not just celebrate this win, but build upon it. We cannot be satisfied with our institutions until the transgender community is also protected and ensured the resources, care, and quality of life that is within their rights.

Other good news: folks wanting to change their gender marker on Colorado state documents still can! The Colorado Name Change Project is an excellent resource for those seeking help with this.

My ask: keep showing up at The Center. Show up for all of the LGBTQ+ organizations that are fighting to make sure we are not erased. Show up for each other. This is just the beginning of the steps that must be taken to ensure all our rights are protected—to ensure there is Queer Liberation for Everyone.
