She Called Herself Kate: New Perspectives on Cathay Williams, A Buffalo Soldier

Join us for a historiographic talk on the story of Cathay Williams, commonly known as the only woman to serve as a Buffalo Soldier. Williams enlisted as "William Cathay" in 1866 and served as a man, but lived in Colorado as a woman after the military. Hear new research on the life of Cathay Williams that identifies her as a transgender woman, examining historical records with the latest insights on nonbinary gender identities, and shares about other gender non-conforming and transgender people in history.
