All of The Initiative staff and interns attend a ½ day Gender and Sexuality 101 presentation as part of their on-boarding training at the organization. The Gender and Sexuality 101 presentation covers in-depth topics such as histories of colonization as they relate to the gender binary, key terminology, the differences between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, gender attribution, and sexual orientation, traditional and authentic gender models, pronoun usage, and radical queer and trans resistance movements. Several of The Initiative’s staff members identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and self-reflexive discussions of current queer and trans issues, systems of power, and decolonial, anti-oppression work are a key part of staff meetings and direct service meetings.
