2021 began with limited virtual programming. In May, as vaccines became available for those over the age of 12, The Center held vaccine clinics for our community, including our LGBTQ+ youth. In June, Rainbow Alley participated in Pride Hubs at The Center and JCC, as well as the Coors Lights Virtual Denver Pride Parade and a performance at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
The Center on Colfax officially reopened its doors after more than a year on July 7, 2021. In early August, Rainbow Alley held Summer Academy, hosting youth for the first time in-person since the beginning of the pandemic. The week began at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, where the youth toured and participated in acting and technical theater workshops. Tuesday started with a historical art project, where they honored our LGBTQIA+ heroes, and ended with a queer euphoria writing workshop. On Wednesday, they learned about drag from Miss Jessica L’whor and visited the Museo de las Americas for a conversation about healthy relationships. Thursday was spent hopping between the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary art, and topped the day off with a virtual visit from our favorite stand-up comedian, Isaac Duarte. Finally, it was Friday, and our young people participated in a rock-star workshop and talent show.
In early fall Rainbow Alley participated in programs like The Center’s Trans and Enby Party and its Trans Clothing Drive. For Youth Pride, Rainbow Alley participated in virtual and in-person events with Kimball Art Museum, Planned Parenthood, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Rainbow Alley also hosted a virtual series entitled “Read It or Don't Book Group”.
In late October, The Center partnered with Girls Inc. of Denver Metro and Jacobs Engineering to put on Stem is NOT a Drag. Participants explored how to use STEM to make the world more fabulous, WERK on engineering challenges, and have fun doing it. The event involved drag performances, science experiments, and snacks—plus special contests and prizes.
Rainbow Alley closed out 2021 with the return of Holigay Celebration on December 11. Queer Santa checked her list for all LGBTQ+ youth, stopping by a fantastic holiday wonderland with gifts in hand.
